Current
Glass tubing, neon
72” x 72” x 2”
2024
I thought of this piece during the beginning of my last semester at Alfred. I was expected to jump back into making work as usual when the death toll of Palestinians had recently passed 25,000. I struggled to work. I felt guilty about being in art school and having a massive level of privilege and spent time kicking myself without the ability to do more good for the world around me. I made work about this internal/global struggle to cope with the frustration. The form of this work is a circle which references the earth and a cycle. The break in one of my tubes is so far removed from the power supply but it still has enough strength to ruin the whole system. The title Current references the flow of power throughout the neon and also the current moment we are in. The current events around the world are taking a huge toll on me even with the most physical distance possible.
